Hans' Animal Life Science Foundation from the Hans’ Animal Life

Nature of award
Monetary award of $5,000 including travel grant and an appropriate plaque.
Award received by one prize winner.
Purpose
To recognize and stimulate distinguished service to animal production
internationally.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this award, the nominee should have made a meritorious
scientific contribution by way of teaching, research or other service to
animal agriculture over a period of five or more years, and must have been
nominated by three (3) members of Associations affiliated to the World
Association for Animal Production.
Particular attention will be paid to the international significance of the
contribution in terms of the livestock sector, overall.
The award nominating committee
The Scientific Advisory Committee is responsible for the selection of the
awardees.
The Scientific Advisory Committee may reject all nominees when, in their
opinion, no worthy candidate has been nominated.
Awards will be presented on the occasion of the WAAP congress.

A dossier that contains the following material: (three copies if sent by
post)
o Biography of the nominee
o List of publications, courses taught and other
pertinent credentials
o Summary statement of 2 pages maximum documenting
accomplishments and outlining the major contributions to international
animal production on which the nomination is based.

Tewolde Family Award from Dr. Assefaw Tewolde
Nature of Award
Monetary awards of $500 each and an appropriate plaque.
Purpose
To recognize and stimulate distinguished service to animal production
internationally.
Eligibility for nomination
To be eligible for this award, the nominee(s) from a developing country
(UN list) shall have completed the graduate degree (MS or Ph.D.) within
five years of the date of submission of the paper for presentation.
The award is given for the most outstanding orally presented paper and or
the best poster as judged by the evaluation committee, based on scientific
quality, relevance to the livestock industry and quality of presentation
both written and oral. One (1) nominator each is required.
The Award Nominating Committee

awardees.
The Scientific Advisory Committee may reject all nominees when, in their
opinion, no worthy candidate has been nominated.

SASAS Awards
Aim
The aim of any award by the Society is to recognise and promote
distinguished service to the animal industry.
Types and categories of awards
Medals
The Council may, on written recommendation of the Awards Committee, award
Bronze, Silver or Gold medals to Members of the Society in each of the
research (for Members serving in a research capacity), technology transfer
(for Members providing advisory, consultative or educational services) and
industry development (for Members serving in the animal production
industry) categories.
Bronze medals
Bronze medals are awarded in respect of achievements in a particular year
pertaining to, in the research category, a meritorious thesis,
dissertation or other scientific publication relevant to research in the
field of animal science; in the technology transfer category, the
application of innovative management systems or new techniques for the
transfer of knowledge and technology regarding animal science and related
fields; and in the industry development category, a deserving contribution
towards the development and improvement of production in the livestock
industry.
Silver medals
Silver medals are awarded in respect of achievements over a number of
years pertaining to, in the research category, an exceptionally deserving
and original research effort or meritorious contributions which has been
published in recognised and refereed scientific journals; in the
technology transfer category, exceptional achievements or innovations of
significant importance in the use and transfer of knowledge and technology
regarding animal science and related fields; and in the industry
development category, exceptional contributions and involvement that
significantly influenced and directed the development and improvement of
production in the livestock industry.
Gold medals
Gold medals are the most prestigious and highest awards of the Society and
are awarded in all categories to a Member of the Society who is at the end
of his career and who has served animal science and the Society honourably
and in such a manner that his quality scientific contributions,
achievements, involvement and extended service to South Africa's animal
production industry have been recognised as exceptionally meritorious by
many, both nationally and internationally.
Nomination of nominees for medals

A form for the nomination of Members of the Society for medals is
available from the Secretary (jvryssen@up.ac.za). |

Any Member or group of Members, i.e. a Branch or Interest Group, may
nominate fellow members, excluding members serving on the Awards Committee
at the time. |
 |
In respect of each nominee it is required that a completed nomination
form, a comprehensive curriculum vitae and a thorough motivation be
submitted to the Awards committee six months before the date of the next
Biennial General Meeting. |
 |
The motivation mentioned in By-Law B 3.3 shall in the case of Bronze and
Silver medals preferably not exceed two typewritten A4 papers and in the
case of Gold medals not exceed three typewritten A4 pages and must clearly
motivate and indicate in what way and to what extent the relevant
activities of the nominee excels and shall be in accordance with the
guidelines supplied by the Council and available from the Secretary. |

Where a thesis is involved a summary of the examiners' report and a copy
of the thesis must also accompany the documents mentioned in By-Law B 3.3. |
 |
The nominator may approach the nominee to assist in providing the
necessary information that is required for the submission: Provided that
this disclosure to and involvement of a nominee shall be with the clear
understanding by all involved that it is only to submit a thorough
motivation and does not mean that an award will automatically be awarded
by the Society. |
 |
Each nomination shall be supported by at least one seconder and duly
signed by both the nominator and the seconder. |
 |
In order to prevent possible embarrassment to all involved, the nominee
shall accept his nomination and certify its contents by signing the
nomination form and the accompanying documentation. |
 |
The Secretary shall refer all nominations received before the due date
to the Awards Committee for evaluation and recommendation to Council. |
 |
Awards shall be based on merit only and all achievements mentioned in
the motivation will be evaluated by the Awards Committee against accepted
standards to ensure that the candidate is a worthy recipient of the
appropriate medal of the Society and that the prestige of the award
remains high. |
